The Farmers Market Silverton, Pretoria, South Africa
The Farmers Market is one of the few places in Pretoria where you can do all your grocery shopping and it's a lot cheaper than the regular retailers. I remember when I was very young my mom used to take me with to do shopping there as everything you can think of to buy for your household is available for purchase.
Here is Happy Eden Farmers's stall, everything they grow is organic
A selection of every kind of dry herb and spice you can think of
Tucked away near one of the busiest intersections in Pretoria, its
almost unthinkable that this place is a wonderful spot for a picnic with
all the items for your basket at your fingertips. When you want to grab
something to eat that is unique, the Farmers market has it all, from
home made pastries with the most wonderful fillings to traditional South
African foods like "Pap and Kaiings", "Melkkos" and many others. If you
prefer just having a coffee and enjoying the scenery, that option is
available as well. You will even find Indian and Chinese food at this
market if that is more your thing.
A selection of very unique pies
The main upside to this place in our opinion is the many fresh products that is a 100% organic. Meats, fish, poultry, veggies, cheese, spices and fresh herbs can be found everywhere! The poultry has no brine injected, the meat has no hormones, the pork products is made with the best ingredients and no MSG or preservatives is used in making the kebabs, cheese sausages and other products available. Speciality products for example Kefir and Kombucha as well as bread made from stone ground flour can also be found to make a life lived organically so easy!
The market also has a large contingency of other interesting products like artworks, jewellery, scarves, clothes, and hand crafted bead-work that South Africans are famous for. A variety of presents, books, plants, flowers and collectables like old coins can be bought if you are looking for a great present at an affordable price.
Everyone is very friendly and helpful, and the vibe is a bustling one. Many friends and families meet here for a early Saturday morning get together, whilst sipping their favourite coffee and eating a deluxe muffin.
The market opens every Saturday morning from 5:30 until about 9:00,
therefore our advice is get there early to not miss out on products as
they sell out quickly! From 9:00 onwards the market's atmosphere tapers
down as people start packing up.
If you are visiting
South Africa and find yourself in Pretoria, we highly recommend that you
visit this little treasure to indulge in a little South African culture
- it is well worth it!
